Compared with traditional semiconductors such as silicon and gallium arsenide semiconductor band gap width offers a theoretical improvement on an order of magnitude. At Chalmers we are developing GaN-HEMTs for power applications and microwave sensing. The method for monolithic integration with passive devices have also been developed. The result is a technology for the manufacture of semiconductor integrated circuits monolithically wide band gap (KBD-MMIC).

MARICE at the University of Iceland offer a PhD studentship as part of NorMER, a Nordic Centre of Excellence funded by Nordforsk. The MARICE PhD project will focus on the impact of climate change on processes that influence survival of offspring produced by different sub-populations of cod in Icelandic waters. This will include an investigation into the role of freshwater runoff and hydrodynamic variability on survival and drift of cod eggs and larvae. The student will also spend four months at the University of Bergen, Norway.

The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is an internationally recognized research and teaching unit. The department covers Aquatic Sciences, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Environmental Science and Technology. The department houses the Finnish Center of Excellence in Evolutionary Research and part of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Virus Research. The department enjoys an outstanding environment, occupying modern buildings on the shore of Lake Jyväsjärvi. The department has well-equipped laboratories, as well as specialist facilities including a bioimaging suite, a molecular genetics laboratory and a stable isotope analysis facility. The department also maintains a research station at Konnevesi which includes experimental tank and flow channel facilities.

The department is currently seeking to recruit staff to the following positions:

University lecturers (2 positions), starting from 1 August 2011, either for four years or for open-ended contracts.

The postdoctoral researcher in Aquatic Sciences will be a collaborative position with the Jyväskylä unit of the Finnish Environment Research Institute (SYKE). Project description

With reference to the project manager, the work of the Ph.D. fellow will consist mainly of duties in connection with research and development regarding life cycle assessment within the research group of Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition.

The PhD project will be part of a larger interdisciplinary project funded by the Strategic Research Council, Clean and environmentally friendly animal waste technologies for fertilizer and energy production (CLEANWASTE). The project has several national and international partners from different research institutes and industries, and hence excellent possibilities for external collaboration.

The PhD project will include work on:

Data collection from project partners about emissions from different animal manure treatment technologies
Development of a new impact assessment category considering odour as an environmental impact
Conducting comparative life cycle assessments of different manure treatment technologies

Postdoc in Human Locomotor Control, Denmark

Research areas will be within investigation of multi-sensory control strategies for locomotion using a state-of-the-art virtual reality system, split belt treadmill as well as mechanical actuator systems. Investigations will also concern the contributions of visual, vestibular and proprioceptive information to the control of locomotion in both healthy and diseased populations.

The Postdoc will join the Neural Engineering and Neurophysiology of Movement Group within the Center for Sensory-Motor Interaction at the Department of Health Science and Technology, Aalborg University. Currently the group consists of 1 Professor, 4 Associate Professors, 8 Post-doctoral fellows and 15 PhD students. The group conducts research in eight laboratories that comprise state-of-the-art facilities for animal, human and clinical experiments as well as unique instrumentation and methodologies developed by the group.

Applicants will have successfully completed a PhD, and experience with human experimental studies, movement analysis, software programming and signal processing is expected. Knowledge of virtual reality systems and neurophysiological assessment techniques is an advantage. The Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship adheres to the requirements for Pediatric Pulmonology certification by the Pulmonology Subboard of the American Board of Pediatrics, and is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The goals of our three year program are to provide:

- A base of scientific skills and expertise that will ultimately allow fellows to become independently functioning and funded investigators
- Skills to provide expert clinical care for children and adolescents with disorders of the respiratory system
- A solid knowledge base and skills to guide, instruct and teach others the fundamentals of lung function and clinical care
- To build administrative and time management skills

Curriculum

The first year is comprised of broadly based clinical training followed by two years primarily devoted to research training. Each fellow’s continuity clinic developed in year one, is extended on a limited basis to years two and three providing extensive exposure to pulmonary diseases, testing/interpretation and diagnosis. Throughout all three years fellows are required to attend, participate in, and present various clinical, physiology, and research conferences and seminars. Emphasis is continually placed on the critical and inquisitive interpretation of all written and spoken scientific information. Much effort is devoted to assisting fellows in developing clear and concise teaching and writing skills.

Ongoing Evaluations of Fellows

Upon arrival in the fellowship, the goals and expectations for the fellowship are reviewed with the Program Director. In addition to frequent informal interactions, the fellow and the Program Director meet semiannually to review progress, obstacles, and plans. In the second year, plans are developed with the fellow for his or her job search strategy.

Gottstein Fellowships 2010/11

Since its formation, the Gottstein Trust has awarded more than 110 Fellowships. The Gottstein Fellowship consists of a grant that is awarded to people from, or associated with, Australian forest industries. The grant allows those selected to conduct research projects and further their experience, education or training, either within or outside Australia.

Ninety percent of the grant is payable to the Fellow on commencement and the remaining ten percent is payable within thirty days of the receipt of the final report. Copyright of the work done under the Fellowship program is assigned to the Trustees.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and partners are pleased to announce the First Global Symposium on Health Systems Research (HSR) - Science to Accelerate Universal Health Coverage.

Researchers, policy-makers, funders, and other stakeholders representing diverse constituencies will gather in Montreux, Switzerland to share evidence, identify significant knowledge gaps, and set a research agenda that reflects the needs of low and middle-income countries. The Symposium is structured around two main streams:

The first stream is relevant for presenting HSR findings. Results can be based on primary or secondary data sources, employ quantitative and/or qualitative research methods and derive from completed or ongoing research. Recommendations / conclusions should demonstrate contributions of the described research to enhancing universal health coverage in a particular setting and the potential applications to other settings, if applicable. Findings in this stream will correspond to one of the following themes:

- Political economy of universal health coverage
- Health system financing
- Scaling-up of health services
- Monitoring and evaluation
- Knowledge translation

The second stream will be educational and contribute to participants’ learning and skills development for advancing the HSR field. The focus of this stream will include one of the following themes:

- Terminology, taxonomies, frameworks
- Methods for HSR and knowledge translation
- Measures used in HSR
- Capacity building for HSR
- Multidisciplinary approaches

London Metropolitan University is pleased to announce a major scholarship programme for outstanding Polish students.

The scholarship programme will cover the students tuition fees and offer one full and two 50% partial scholarships for outstanding Polish graduates to study for a range of masters degrees at the University.

The scholarship programme will be available to all graduates of Polish nationality, and each year's winners will be determined by a panel including academics from the University and representatives from the Polish community and Poland.

The closing date for applications will be 31 May and 31 October each year, and the programme will run for five years, and the awards will be for any masters degree at the University. The first closing date for applications is 31 May 2010.

Obscure Wood Scholarships for Leadership Program

The obscure WOOD SCHOLARSHIPS, awarded by the Wood Scholarship Board, is awarded to the students of the Minnesota State University (MSU), Mankato, who are actively involved in community service & have contributed to the society. The obscure Wood Scholarships are also called as the Truman & Reta Wood Community Leadership Scholarships & has two awards totaling $10,000 annually.

ABOUT THE BOARD
The WOOD Scholarship board was set-up in Jan 1994 by its various founders namely Dr Truman Wood & Reta Wood. Truman Wood is the former professor of Political Science/Law Enforcement at MSU & Reta Wood taught elementary school 25 years for Mankato Area Public Schools. Both of them have been participating regularly in community services in the Mankato area. Truman Wood providing service to the church, Mankato Planning Commission and local politics & Reta Wood involved with church and civic organizations. Currently the board consists of various members including the friends and students of the Woods. The board has awarded Wood scholarships to the tune of $260,000 in Minnesota State University (MSU), Mankato scholarships till date. The major contributor towards the scholarship fund has been the Annual fundraising dinner – part guest lecture & part social event.

SELECTION PROCESS
The Wood scholarships are given to the students based on the below criteria.
• Creativity & commitment to community activities
• Problem solving skills
• Dedication towards community & contributions
• Political Science or International Relations as the first major
• 90 semester hours completed by the end of Spring semester
• Excellent GPA

The selection is done based on the applicants’ dedication towards the community. As the founders are very active in community services, the main factor for selection of the winner is the area of social service as well. The application needs to be accompanied by the details of the community service with the references from the Political Science faculty members from MSU. The application forms are available at the website & have to be mailed with the required attachments by the application deadline which is normally by Feb or March of every year. Two winners are selected by the board with each receiving a Wood scholarship for $5,000 annually.
